Minutes - January 2021

Present: Adam, Barbara, Caterina, Chloe, Joe, John, Kevin, Richard, Tracey, John and Craig.
Absent: Netta, Ron, and Tiffany

1. Approval of Agenda

The agenda was approved without any changes.

2. Treasurer’s Report

Richard reported that:

  • we had received 10 donations for the month of December for a net $834.74,
  • that there were no expenses during the month, 
  • that in the bank account, after extracting the externally restricted funds, there is a net to OBIN of $2,347.66, and,
  • that we do have expenses planned in January for the video production.

3. Content Management Update

Joe introduced the subject by noting that we need a team rather than a single individual to coordinate and manage content. John added that we have a potential candidate who has offered to help. Craig suggested that John check and see if he has any association with UBI. 

4. Technology: NationBuilder Update

Joe stated that progress was being made on the database with the help of Saul and the new volunteer.

5. Discussion of Internal Relations Plan: Additional Ideas and Support for Internal Relations

Caterina described the OBIN Internal Relations Plan for 2021. The vision is to build relationships with MPPs. She noted that she would be searching for volunteers for the project at her Thursday meeting with affiliates. It was agreed that the C-Team would focus its efforts in support of Caterina. Joe added that according to the Environics Survey support for basic income has risen from 50% to approximately 66%.

6. January Newsletter

Joe pointed out that he had made some suggestions to John for the January newsletter and reminded everyone that today is the deadline for suggestions.

7. Action Items Related to December Roundtable

(a) Preparation of C-Team Members’ Video

Joe complimented Caterina for initiating the process of preparing C-Team members’ videos.

(b) The Stanford Project

John introduced the Stanford project and suggested that it was a good idea and a model that we might consider utilizing.  However, after a lengthy discussion, it was agreed that it was too complicated and that we would not implement it.

8. February Newsletter

It was agreed that the February newsletter would be published February 8 and that comments should be submitted to John by February 5.

9. Roundtable

Craig indicated that he is working with Elaine Power preparing short video themes which support basic income.  These are primarily about people who fall through the cracks during a pandemic and need government support. The videos are being prepared for social media and will be released on a once per week basis.

10. Other Business

  • Car Protest for Reopening of Parliament January 25.

Joe pointed out that he had proposed a car rally for downtown Ottawa for the opening of parliament January 25 that would focus attention on basic income but that the proposal had received little support.

  • Quote of the Week

Joe asked that we send him any quotes that could be used to support basic income.

11. Schedule for Next Meeting

It was agreed that the next meeting would be held Monday, February 8 at 7 pm.
