Planning a Basic Income Municipal Campaign

Posted on Resources by Kerry Lubrick · April 17, 2024 3:14 PM

Many local groups across Ontario seek assistance as they plan and pursue campaigns to encourage municipal councils to pass formal motions/resolutions in support of a Basic Income. Planning a Basic Income Municipal Strategy April 2024  guide has been developed and endorsed by Ontario Basic Income Network (OBIN) as a resource to assist in the process. Successfully getting a municipal motion passed is but one step along the path to the ultimate goal of getting the federal government to financially support and implement a Basic Income to address poverty across the country.

The guide is structured to assist groups at various stages of organizational and campaign development. You can start at the beginning and work your way through from the basics, to campaign strategy and planning, to identification of tools and resources that will assist you in achieving your outcomes. Alternatively, you can pick and choose the sections that suit your purposes. Successful municipal motions from other provinces demonstrate that local issues must drive the approach taken.  There is no one right way to do this.

Your feedback is helpful to improving the process for subsequent updates.

Please also view the panel discussion with Municipal Leaders in Ontario who were successful in passing resolutions at their municipal councils.
